Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

John’s Gospel records seven “I AM” statements that Jesus made about Himself. Each statement gives us some insight as to the Nature and Person of our Lord and Savior. When Jesus said, “I AM” He was equating Himself with Jehovah God. He was saying that He was the one who talked with Moses at the burning bush. The religious authorities felt that the statement was blasphemy and wanted Him executed. How dare this mere carpenter say that He is Jehovah God? People followed Jesus for what they could get out of Him. He had just fed 5,000 men and now they wanted more bread. Some were saying, “Give us a sign like Moses. He fed the people with manna for 40 years in the desert.” Jesus told the people that He is the bread of life, and that if a person would believe on Him he would never hunger spiritually again. Bread was the main staple in Israel at that time. He was saying that a person must believe in Him or perish. I had a Chinese coworker who ate rice everyday. I asked him one day, “Don’t your get tired of eating rice everyday?” His response was, “No, it is the main food in China.” So I asked again, “Yes, I understand, but surely you get tired of eating the same thing each day?” His response was the same, “No, it is the main food in China.” I finally gave up and decided that he would not admit that he gets tired of eating rice everyday. Reflecting on our conversation I realized that we should never grow tired of Jesus. He is “the bread of life” and apart from Him there is no life. He is the only true source of nourishment for mankind. The world says, “Aren’t you tired of this whole Jesus thing?” The devil would attack us the same way, “Surely all that time you have spent with Jesus was not worth it!” In our moments of weakness we grow tired of the Lord because we do not truly understand that He is the bread of life. May we not grow tired of Him! May we realize that everything we have comes from Him! May we receive all of our spiritual nourishment from Him! As my Chinese friend ate rice every day and never grew tired of it may we embrace the Great “I AM” and never grow tired of Him.

Lord You are the bread of life and You are my portion. May I never grow tired of You. May You always be new and fresh to me each morning of every day. I submit to Your Lordship in my life. May You use me to give the Bread of Life to a hungry world. In Your Name I pray. Amen
