I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE

TEXT: JOHN 11:25

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,

Soon Jesus will be crucified, and in this chapter He raised His friend Lazarus from the grave. This is the fifth “I AM” statement of our Lord. Without the resurrection we have no life, and Christianity is all in vain. We must have a personal resurrection by trusting the Lord as our Savior. When this happens we truly have a new life that can be empowered by the Spirit. The same power that raised Lazarus from the grave lives in every Christian. The great news is that if Jesus can raise Lazarus from the grave, He can also raise Himself up from the grave. The greater news is that He will raise us up too. Jesus said, “Because I live, you also will live.”(John 14:19). The recipient of this message was Lazarus’ sister Martha. Lazarus had been dead four days and Jesus said that his sickness would not result in death but in the glory of God. On the fourth day when Jesus arrives into town He gives Martha this message: “I am the resurrection and the life.” This is a public message recorded in John’s gospel for all of the world to read. It is a preserved message because God wants the world to know that only through Jesus can we have eternal life. It was a personal message directed toward Martha herself. So it is a vital message for us today! It is a message about His person: “I AM”. It is a message about His power: “the resurrection.” It is a message about His principle: “the life.” The great reality of the message is twofold. First of all, if we believe in Christ and die physically we will live spiritually and eternally. Secondly, if we are alive spiritually we will never die. In this chapter there is great comfort. Lazarus was raised to life and his sickness did not result in death but in the glory of God. His sisters Mary and Martha were comforted. There is comfort for us knowing that one day Jesus will raise us from the grave. Faith will be sight and every effort done for Christ will be realized and rewarded. I am the resurrection and the life. Do you have eternal life?

SUGGESTED PRAYER:

Dear Lord, help me realize that the same power that raised Lazarus from the grave lives in me. Help me bring honor and glory to You through the trials You have given me. Lord You have given me a new life and I give it to You to use me as You see fit. Thank You for saving me. Amen.
