TEXT: HEBREWS 11:1
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
What is faith? Faith is easy to define, but difficult to carry out. Faith in simple terms is taking God at His word and then acting on it. Hebrews chapter 11 is the great faith chapter of the bible. The first 3 verses describe faith, and the rest of the chapter gives us examples of how people lived by faith in the Old Testament. When we observe the chapter as a whole we discover that there are 40 verses in it. The number 40 is the number of testing in the bible. When Noah was in the ark it rained 40 days and 40 nights. At age 40 Moses tried to deliver the children of Israel, but murdered an Egyptian. He then spent 40 years in the desert. At age 80 he did deliver Israel and spent the next 40 years wandering in the desert. Moses also spent 40 days with God as the Lord gave him the 10 commandments. Israel wandered 40 years in the desert, and all the men died except Joshua and Caleb. Goliath taunted Saul’s army for 40 days. Samuel judged Israel 40 years. David was king for 40 years. Jesus was in the wilderness 40 days being tempted of Satan. After His resurrection He stayed 40 days before His ascension. So 40 is the number of testing in the Scriptures. The writer of Hebrews is telling us that our faith will be tested. We never graduate. God will test our faith until we are taken home by Him. The writer of Hebrews explains how Jesus is a superior Person. He is better than the prophets, angels, and even Moses. The writer also explains that Jesus is a superior Priesthood. It is based on a better covenant, a better sanctuary, and a better sacrifice. Then the writer talks about a superior principle; that of faith. If we would surrender to God and live by faith we would find spiritual rest for our souls. Faith is only as good as its object. Our object is Jesus Christ; the Superior Person and the Superior Priest. In verse 1 faith is characterized or described. Faith gives confidence. Faith is the substance of things hoped for. The word substance means a support. It is like a foundation to a home. It can be like a title deed or contract. Faith is our title deed and it brings confidence as we begin to trust God. We also see faith’s conviction. The word evidence means conviction. It is in our hearts that we believe that God will do what He promised. When a person is saved he is a new creation. In his heart he is convinced that God is real and that He will do what He said He will do. We do not have a hope so maybe so faith. No, no, we are trusting in the living God who has done a work in our hearts. Faith does not depend on circumstances. What are your facing? What are you going through? Let the four precious words of Jesus sink deep into your heart: “Have faith in God.”(Mark 11:22).
I am facing some difficult things today. I know that faith is my foundation and I am convinced that You will help me. Lord I believe help my unbelief. Right now I decide that I will begin to walk by faith trusting You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
